Matt Mason brings a strong background in local government law and a commitment to public service to his practice at Teague Campbell. He comes to the firm from serving as the long-time Chief Deputy County Attorney in Guilford County, where he was born and raised. On his leaving Guilford County for Teague Campbell, local media described him as capable, dedicated, talented, respected and one of Guilford County’s best assets.
That role followed Matt’s earlier career in private practice representing local governments across the state in a wide variety of litigation in the state and federal courts. He has appeared at all levels of North Carolina’s trial and appellate courts, in each of its federal courts (Eastern, Middle, and Western Districts), and in the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit.
At Teague Campbell, Matt focuses on Local Government Services, where he advises and represents public entities throughout North Carolina, including counties, municipalities, boards, elected and appointed officials, and staff. His work includes guiding clients across the full spectrum of local government issues, including but not limited to ordinances, policies, land use, economic development, personnel , law enforcement, emergency services, fire, social services, public health, contracts, procurement, budget, finance, public meetings, public records, conflicts of interest, constitutional questions, liability, and myriad day-to-day operational challenges.
Matt’s legal career reflects a deep connection to local government and community involvement. He appreciates the opportunity to bring a problem-solving approach to difficult local government challenges. He has provided legal counsel over many years to municipalities, counties, boards, and commissions, and is certified as a Superior Court Mediator. He also contributes to legal education and training, having instructed local government attorneys, board members, staff, and law enforcement and detention officers.
In addition to his practice, Matt is an active member of professional associations, including the North Carolina Bar Association’s Government & Public Sector Section, which he chaired, and its Zoning, Planning and Land Use Section. He is also a past member of the leadership of its Criminal Justice Section and a past officer and director of the North Carolina Association of Police and Sheriff Attorneys. Matt was a member of the Moot Court Board at the University of Virginia School of Law and has frequently served as a moot court judge there and at Elon University Law School.
Matt’s commitment to service extends beyond the legal field. He has volunteered with Guilford County Schools, Cone Health, the Bobby Labonte Foundation, and the Greensboro Velo Club, where he also served as past president.
Outside of work, Matt admits that though his competitive sports days are behind him – he was once a city and state tennis champion and top-ranked cyclist — he still enjoys biking, hiking, running, tennis, and most anything that involves the outdoors across North Carolina and beyond, and values spending time with his wife, Michelle, a hospice social worker. His colleagues describe him as professional, knowledgeable, and hard-working, and he approaches each matter with a dedication to improving outcomes for his clients and the communities they serve.
