A longtime North Carolina resident, Matt brings 30 years of experience to his litigation practice that is focused on complex claims involving wrongful death and major catastrophic accidents, medical malpractice, professional and products liability claims, and commercial litigation. He provides counsel to a variety of medical and mental health clinics and their providers in North Carolina including psychiatric clinics, dialysis clinics, labor and delivery units and traveling nurse programs. Matt also routinely represents professionals before their respective licensing boards, handles general business needs and interacts with local law enforcement agencies on behalf of his clients. This broad base of experience allows him to better guide his clients through the litigation process.

Over the years Matt has gained significant experience representing the healthcare industry, trucking and commercial transportation companies, and industrial plants. He regularly defends high profile medical malpractice cases and was one of the lead counsel in the Duke Health hydraulic fluid lawsuits. Matt also represents defendants in 1983 claims involving state and local prisoners, traumatic brain injury cases and claims of deliberate misconduct. He has the skill set necessary to navigate multi-party litigation and enjoys walking with his clients through the challenges and intricacies of such litigation. Matt maintains relationships with experts across disciplines and is able to utilize those relationships to enhance his client’s defense.

Matt’s passion for learning, analysis and challenge led him to law and continues to be motivating factors in maintaining his active practice. He uses his knowledge of the law to speak publicly for clients and industry groups, including the North Carolina Trucking Association, the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys, the North Carolina Safety Conference, and multiple Claims Summits for large insurance companies. He has also been inducted into premier groups such as the American Board of Trial Advocates and Litigation Counsel of America. Matt has been selected by his peers to appear in The Best Lawyers in America© since 2012, was included in the North Carolina Edition of Super Lawyers for 2019-2023, and has maintained the highest (AV-Rated) ranking awarded by Martindale-Hubbell.

When he’s not engrossed in multi-party litigation, Matt prioritizes family time and travel. He and his wife have two boys, one in college and one in high school, and together they spend most of their time outdoors. As a family they enjoy boating, fishing, hunting or hiking and when he’s on his own, Matt’s favorite pastime is hunting pheasants in South Dakota with his two dogs. He has been to 46 of the 50 states and hopes to complete his 50 state goal very soon.
