Matt received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a minor in History from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  During his time in undergrad, Matt was active in both scholastic and community service activities.  He was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honors fraternity for scholastic achievement, while serving as head coach of several Special Olympics athletic teams for Durham County Special Olympics.  Matt also volunteered for the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, along with participating on a variety of intramural athletic teams.

Matt continued his studies at The University of North Carolina’s School of Law, where he was a member of The First Amendment Law Review.  He was active in UNC’s pro bono program, representing underprivileged and underrepresented clients in various practice fields, including employment law and civil liability.  Matt clerked for the Honorable Sheila A. Ditullio, County Court Judge in New York’s 8th Judicial District, in addition to working for two private law firms that collectively practiced in the fields of workers’ compensation defense, professional malpractice defense, catastrophic injury defense, civil rights, discrimination, and harassment defense litigation, class action defense, and insurance coverage and bad faith litigation.

Since graduating law school and becoming licensed in the state of North Carolina, Matt has dedicated his practice to advising employers and insurance companies on matters involving workers’ compensation defense, employment law, and general corporate risk.  In addition to litigating a variety of cases in front of the North Carolina Industrial Commission, Matt has handled matters involving insurance coverage disputes, lien subrogation recovery, and general corporate risk management.  He enjoys offering his clients consulting advice to avoid the myriad risks associated with running a business in North Carolina, while also having the courtroom expertise to litigate on behalf of his clients whenever the need arises.

His professional memberships include the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys, North Carolina State Bar, and  North Carolina Bar Association.
