Originally from the Outer Banks, Melissa attended North Carolina State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a minor in Criminology.  She subsequently began a career in law enforcement, which is where she became intrigued by the intricacies of the law.  Melissa graduated from Campbell Law School with a Juris Doctor degree, finished in the top 25% of her class and was inducted into the Order of Old Kivett.

During her time at Campbell, Melissa served as an articles editor and staff member for the Campbell Law Review and was a member of the Pro Bono Council, which included a term as Secretary. She was also a member of the Campbell Law Moot Court Team and participated in the 2014 Richard A. Lord Intramural Moot Court Competition where her team finished in the top 8.  Melissa gained experience and perspective from her judicial externship with The Honorable Paul M. Newby of the NC Supreme Court and her judicial internship with The Honorable Ann Marie Calabria of the NC Court of Appeals.

Melissa enjoys the practice of law because it provides a unique challenge every day.  She is an external processer who gains energy and momentum from communicating with others in a variety of settings.  Melissa grew up hunting and fishing with her dad, who was a charter boat captain on the Outer Banks, and still enjoys both past times.  In addition to crafting legal arguments, she also enjoys baking, sewing, hand embroidery and painting, just to name a few.
